Hello, my name is Rasta Musick (he/him). I am an American currently living in Japan with a passion for gaming and competition. I started my own journey of playing and competing in tournaments with chess – having gone to nationals at the age of 9 and placing fifth. Moving to Japan at the age of 12, I spent four years studying in college from the ages of 12 to 16 before getting back into competition. Moving on from chess, I started playing the board game go and reached 6 dan. During this time, I also started playing League of Legends, hitting Master rank on the North American servers while living in Japan.
From there, I also joined a bachata dance team and toured Japan performing with them. The team environment helped me to hone and develop the communication and interpersonal skills involved with high pressure, team-based experiences. And I worked to keep myself improving while supporting (and receiving support from) my teammates.
Alongside my personal journey of growth and high level performance, I also informally coached and guided people around me for these different sports as far back as 2010 (including go, dance, and League). I transitioned into professional life, academic, and competitive gaming coaching in 2013 when I joined the Adjustment Guidance team as a therapeutic assistant. While working at Adjustment Guidance I was formally trained in visualization, SMART goal setting, cognitive behavioral therapy, objective perspective taking, guided mindfulness, and intuition validation. Through observing and assisting in the therapeutic environment, I also came to realize how invaluable communication was in the therapeutic and coaching spaces.
I’ve spent over a decade in the coaching space and learned that no two clients are the same and therefore no single coaching approach will meet the diverse needs of my clients. Along with my own experience reaching high levels in esports (diamond in apex legends, master in league of legends, mythic in magic the gathering: arena) and physical sports, I can understand the frustrations and challenges faced for aspiring and current professional players. That’s why my client centered approach starts with listening to your needs or the needs of your team and building a coaching plan that is responsive and focused on meeting your goals.
I believe that everyone deserves success. I’m confident that I can help you create a plan to use your time, energy, and focus in a way that helps you hone your mastery and guides you toward achieving your aspirations in the esports scene.
